Ask any fleet manager what winter actually costs and they'll go straight to the bay. Trucks come in crusted in mag-chloride and road sand. The PM tech can't see a fitting, can't read a tire sidewall, can't get a torque wrench on a brake chamber caked in salt.
This article works through a model comparison — quarterly steam-clean versus a monthly dry-ice route — using assumptions and published rates you should substitute with your own fleet's numbers. It is not a result we are claiming for any specific customer.
Why salt is the underlying problem
Mag-chloride and brine wick into harness connectors, sit on relay terminals, and accelerate corrosion. Steam removes visible mud but the rinse cycle can leave moisture behind in connectors; dry ice removes residue without adding water.
What a route day can look like
A route day stages tractors and trailers ahead of the crew's arrival, working outdoors with containment. Typical scope per tractor: engine bay harness and connectors, frame rails and crossmembers, suspension and brake components, DEF and fuel system, fifth wheel and pivot.

Below is a worked example using stated assumptions and our published rates — substitute your own fleet size, wash-bay cost, sensor/harness replacement cost, and downtime value to build your own comparison. Treat every number as an assumption, not a Summit result.
- Assumption: a fleet of N Class 8 tractors on quarterly steam clean, at a stated per-truck session cost including chemical and labor.
- Assumption: sensor/harness replacement rate and unit cost in a salt climate, applied per truck per year.

- Compare against: a monthly dry-ice route at our published per-visit rate, with an assumed (not guaranteed) reduction in sensor/harness replacement and bay tie-up time that you should validate against your own maintenance records before relying on it.

Cold-weather operation
The blasting process is unaffected by cold; the pellet itself is already far below any ambient temperature we'd encounter. What changes is operator endurance, so we shorten rotations and stage the rig out of the wind in severe cold. Indoor work in a heated bay is fine; it still requires CO₂ monitoring and ventilation.
Limitations and safety
- Coverage and scheduling are subject to crew availability and travel; confirmed on enquiry, not guaranteed.
- CO₂ monitoring and ventilation are required for indoor bay work.
- A substrate test patch is run first near vinyl wraps, decals, and reflective tape to confirm settings before a full pass.
- Electrical harnesses and ECM connectors are cleaned dry; any de-energization needed follows the shop's own lockout procedure.
- Dislodged residue (salt, grease) is collected on site; disposal is the fleet's responsibility per its own protocol.
- PPE (hearing, eye, respiratory) is used by our crew per the work environment.
