    Dry Ice for Oilfield Equipment Maintenance: An Alternative to Pressure Washing on the Pad

    Oilfield equipment across a basin needs cleaning constantly: pumpjack motors caked in paraffin, frac iron coated in scale, compressor skids glazed with crude mist, drilling shacks black from diesel exhaust. Most of it has historically been pressure-washed, and more operators are asking about alternatives.

    Pressure washing is cheap and fast on the outside of a tank. The trade-off is the rinse water that can't always be drained on the pad, wet electrical near sensor-heavy controls, and corrosion on iron after repeated wash cycles. That trade-off is what pushes some maintenance programs toward a different method for specific equipment types.

    Why the calculus is changing

    Regulatory expectations around pad-water handling have tightened in some jurisdictions, which makes dumping rinse water on location a bigger compliance question than it used to be. Operators running scheduled PM programs instead of run-to-failure maintenance also have more flexibility to plan cleaning into the calendar. And modern equipment carries more electronics — VFDs, sensor-heavy controls, data loggers — that don't benefit from a high-pressure water fan.

    Dry ice blasting fits that shift for certain equipment types. CO₂ pellets lift hydrocarbons, paraffin, salt scale, and soot by thermal shock, sublimate back to gas, and leave the displaced contaminant on the ground to be collected and disposed of per the site's protocol. There's no rinse water to capture and no process water introduced to the equipment.

    Where it's a fit

    • Frac iron and ground equipment: paraffin and scale removal without abrasive grit on threads and seal surfaces.
    • Compressor skids and gas plants: gear cases, intercoolers, and electrical cabinets cleaned in place between PMs, with electrical work performed only after lockout/tagout.
    • Pumpjack motors and gearboxes: salt and paraffin removal from housings without wetting windings.
    • Drilling shacks and accommodation modules: diesel soot removal from interior surfaces.
    • Workover rigs and coil tubing units: cabin glass, derrick base, and BOP cleaning between jobs without a water truck.

    Cold-weather operation

    The pellet is already at roughly -78 degrees C, so cold ambient temperatures don't change the sublimation process. What does change is operator endurance and substrate behavior — some cold-soaked polymers become more brittle and need a lighter touch, which is why we run a test patch on unfamiliar substrates before committing to a full pass. We shorten shift windows and stage the rig out of the wind in severe cold.

    Logistics and scheduling

    Coverage for out-of-territory routes depends on crew availability and travel; we'll confirm scheduling on enquiry rather than promise a fixed cadence. Operators running a recurring program on a defined asset list can usually plan further ahead than one-off jobs, which are best-effort and typically need lead time to route.

    What it doesn't replace

    Tank exteriors and concrete containment are usually still pressure-wash work. Abrasive blasting still owns coating prep on new iron. Chemical degreasers still have a role on a teardown bench inside a shop. Dry ice fits the cleaning where you want to avoid a water truck, avoid spraying down a sensitive control panel, or avoid a rinse-and-dry cycle on an asset you need back in service quickly.

    Limitations and safety

    • Electrical cabinets and energized components are cleaned only after lockout/tagout per your site's procedure.
    • CO₂ sublimates and displaces oxygen — ventilation and CO₂ monitoring are required in enclosed spaces such as shacks, modules, or compressor buildings.
    • A substrate test patch in an inconspicuous area is run first, particularly on cold-soaked polymers and coated surfaces.
    • Dislodged contaminant (paraffin, scale, soot) stays on site and is collected and disposed of per the operator's own environmental protocol — we don't take on that regulatory responsibility.
    • Hazardous materials such as NORM-contaminated scale, asbestos, or other regulated substances are out of scope without a licensed abatement contractor and applicable regulatory controls.
    • PPE (hearing, eye, respiratory as needed) is required for the crew and any personnel in the work area.
