Pressure washing is the default cleaning method in most industrial yards because it's familiar and the equipment is cheap. But for a meaningful slice of cleaning problems, pressure washing is actually the worst available choice. Here's how to tell the difference.
When pressure washing wins
- Outdoor surfaces with no electrical or contamination concern
- Loose mud, dirt, and debris on rugged equipment
- Concrete pads and poured-in-place surfaces
- Situations where rinse-and-runoff is acceptable
When dry ice wins
- Anywhere water introduces a hazard (electrical, food zone, indoor production)
- Painted, decaled, or graphic-protected surfaces
- Equipment that cannot tolerate disassembly time for dry-down
- Carbonized contamination that water can't penetrate
- Confined or sensitive environments where runoff is a problem
- Situations where photo/time-stamped documentation is useful for your own records
Cost comparison
On per-hour basis, pressure washing looks cheaper. On per-job basis — including disassembly time, dry-down, electrical isolation, decal masking, water reclaim, and any contamination cleanup — dry ice often comes out level or ahead. On total-cost-of-asset basis (factoring in corrosion acceleration from water and decal damage), dry ice wins decisively for most painted equipment.
How to decide
Ask three questions: (1) is there anything that can't get wet within 6 feet of the surface? (2) does the substrate have decals, paint, or graphics worth preserving? (3) is the contamination carbonized or chemically bonded? If any answer is yes, dry ice is probably the right tool.
