    Is dry ice blasting right for this job?

    What the method cannot do

    It does not sanitize

    Dry ice removes physical soil. It is not a sanitizer, disinfectant, or antimicrobial, and it does not satisfy a sanitation or remediation standard on its own. Those steps stay yours.

    It does not strip paint or heavy rust

    Sound coatings and structural corrosion need abrasive or chemical methods. We will tell you when that is what you are actually buying.

    It does not clean live equipment

    Energized gear is de-energized and locked out under your site rules before we touch it, with your qualified person present.

    It does not make the contaminant disappear

    The pellets sublimate; the soil does not. It is contained, collected, and disposed of by the party named in the contract.

    It does not create a maintenance window

    If the asset genuinely never stops, no cleaning method can run on it. We work inside windows that already exist.

    It does not cover hazardous material

    Lead, asbestos, silica, PCBs, and biological hazards require a licensed abatement contractor and the applicable regulatory controls.

    Common questions

    Does dry ice blasting damage the surface underneath?
    It is gentler than sand or soda because the pellets sublimate rather than grind. It is not damage-proof: soft plastics, gaskets, seals, and some coatings can be affected. We confirm suitability with a test patch in an inconspicuous area before full-scope work.
    Can you clean electrical equipment while it is running?
    No. Electrical equipment is cleaned de-energized, under your site's lockout/tagout procedure, with your qualified person present. If an asset cannot be taken out of service, it stays out of scope until an outage is scheduled.
    Is dry ice blasting safe to run indoors?
    It can be, with planning. CO₂ sublimates to gas and displaces oxygen, so indoor and low-airflow work needs forced ventilation and continuous CO₂ monitoring, and confined spaces need a permit, an attendant, and atmospheric monitoring throughout. Hearing and eye protection are required in the work area.
    Does dry ice blasting sanitize or disinfect?
    No. It is a mechanical soil-removal step. It removes physical contamination so a sanitation or antimicrobial step can work on a clean surface — that step is still yours, per your own procedures.
    What happens to the contaminant that comes off?
    The pellets turn to gas, so there is no spent blast media to collect — but everything that was on the surface is now loose. It is contained, collected, and disposed of by whoever the contract says is responsible. Regulated waste needs its disposal route agreed before work starts.
    Will it remove rust or strip paint?
    Not reliably. Dry ice does not profile steel, remove heavy structural corrosion, or strip sound paint at typical industrial settings. Abrasive or chemical methods are the right tool for that work.
