Mobile dry ice blasting in the United States runs roughly $200–$400 per hour for a single-operator crew, with most regional service providers — Summit Cryo included — landing in the $250–$300/hr band. The hour count is rarely the whole story. Buyers who only compare hourly rates almost always misjudge the real number, because dry ice blasting is priced as an outcome (a cleaned asset, with documentation, with no secondary mess to clean up) rather than as a unit of labor. This guide walks the full cost stack, the four variables that actually move the price, what a budget should look like by job type, how to read an apples-to-apples quote, and when buying your own blaster makes more sense than hiring.

We publish our rates because the alternative — opaque pricing — wastes everyone's time. These numbers are the starting point for every quote; the variables below explain where a real quote can land above or below them.
- Local zone (25.0 one-way driving miles or less from our Kalispell base): $275 per on-site hour with a 2-hour minimum, so $550 is the smallest local charge
- Extended zone (more than 25.0 one-way driving miles): $1,000 minimum total project charge — a floor, not a surcharge added on top
- Local on-site examples, hourly arithmetic only: 4 hours is $1,100 and 8 hours is $2,200 at $275/hr, with nothing bundled in
- Recurring programs: scoped in writing per site and cadence
What's included in the rate
Crew labor, blaster, compressor, dry ice supply for the booked window, PPE, containment plastic for typical industrial environments, before/after photo documentation, and a completion report. No surcharges for fuel, mobilization within the published service area, or pellet consumption inside the booked hours. The only line items that are quoted separately and called out up front are: extra dry ice for outlier-consumption jobs, food-zone or clean-room containment beyond the standard kit, lift or scissor rental when we can't bring our own, hot-work permits, and after-hours premium when the customer requires off-shift work outside an already-scheduled window.
The four variables that move the number
- Pellet consumption — heavier contamination uses more pellets per square foot. Most jobs land near the published rate; soot at scale, carbonized grease, or thick pitch on logging equipment can push pellet use to 1.5–2× a normal job and we flag that at quote time.
- Site access — confined spaces, scissor lifts, hot-work permits, after-hours work, and tight LOTO procedures add scope hours rather than pellet cost. A panel that takes 30 minutes in an open shop can take two hours inside a live cabinet room with an electrician on standby.
- Containment — food zones, occupied buildings, clean rooms, and active food-plant lines need extra plastic, HEPA negative-air, and sometimes a tent. We quote those line items separately so you can see them.
- Travel — distance is measured in ordinary one-way driving miles from 109 Alden Loop, Building 12, PNC Business Park, Kalispell, MT 59901. Inside 25.0 driving miles the job is hourly; beyond it the $1,000 minimum total project charge applies and travel, dry ice and site controls are itemised on the written estimate.
Typical budget ranges by job type
These are the numbers we actually quote. They're starting points, not promises — every job gets a written quote — but a buyer planning a budget can use them with confidence.
- Commercial kitchen deep clean (hood plenum, ovens, fryer battery): typically 4–8 on-site hours, off-hours, scoped in writing.
- Vehicle undercarriage or chassis cleaning for restoration: $800–$1,800 per vehicle depending on size and contamination, typically a few on-site hours in the customer's shop.
- Electrical cabinet or motor cleaning (per cabinet, with LOTO): $400–$900 per cabinet on a multi-cabinet visit; price drops sharply as cabinet count rises.
- Heavy-equipment degreasing (skidder, excavator, dozer): $400–$900 per unit when batched at a customer yard; rental-yard route days are quoted as a flat day rate.
- Soot removal after a fire (structural, IICRC-documented): $4–$10 per square foot of affected surface, scoped against the GC's containment plan; bundled into multi-day blocks for larger losses.
- Food-plant line cleaning between sanitation windows: $2,200–$4,400 per visit, typically monthly or quarterly on a scheduled cadence.
- Conveyor, oven, and mixer cleaning inside a sanitation window: $1,100–$2,200 per visit, scoped to fit existing wet-wash crew parallel work.
- Mold remediation source-removal step (IICRC S520, subcontracted to the remediator): $3–$8 per square foot of affected structural material, scoped against the IEP-approved work plan.
- Classic car restoration (zone-by-zone, build-sheet documented): $1,200–$3,500 per vehicle depending on number of zones (engine bay, chassis, trunk, undercarriage).
- Graffiti, adhesive, and gum removal on masonry or painted surfaces: quoted per asset, with lower per-square-foot rates on multi-asset municipal contracts.
How dry ice compares to other methods on a per-job basis
Hourly, dry ice looks expensive next to pressure washing ($75–$150/hr) and abrasive blasting ($150–$250/hr). On a per-asset basis, dry ice usually closes most or all of the gap because of what it doesn't require: disassembly, water containment, dry-down time, decal re-application, electrical isolation, secondary waste disposal, and rework when something corrodes the following week. For carbonized contamination on painted, sensitive, or food-contact surfaces, dry ice is frequently the cheapest option once the full job — not just the cleaning step — is costed honestly.

Take an electrical cabinet with several years of carbon dust and oil mist. Pressure washing isn't on the table — water and energized bus bars don't mix. Solvent wiping is two operators for half a day, several gallons of cleaner, hazardous waste pickup, and a re-clean six months later because the loosened contamination resettles inside the enclosure. Dry ice on the same cabinet is one operator for 60–90 minutes, vacuum-assisted capture of the dislodged contamination, no added media waste stream, and an IR scan-friendly result. The dry ice quote is sometimes higher than the wipe-down labor line, but lower than the all-in number after solvent, disposal, and downtime are included.

What changes market to market is distance. Sites within 25.0 one-way driving miles of our Kalispell base are billed hourly at $275 with a two-hour minimum. Everything beyond that — Spokane, Billings, Bismarck, Calgary and the rest of the footprint — carries the $1,000 minimum total project charge, with travel and mobilization itemised on the written estimate. When to ask for a recurring route
If you have more than four predictable jobs a year, ask for a recurring program. We hold a fixed day on the calendar and route multiple stops on the same mobilization, which spreads travel across sites; the resulting rate is scoped and confirmed in writing per site and cadence. Fleets, food plants, HVAC programs, and municipal contracts typically run on this model. The administrative win is just as important: one PO, one route plan, one set of safety paperwork that gets reused, and a single point of contact who already knows your equipment.
Buy a blaster vs. hire a mobile service
We get this question every month. The breakeven is real and it's not where most buyers expect. A capable industrial dry ice blasting setup — blaster, 185+ CFM compressor, hoses, nozzles, PPE — is $35,000–$80,000 in equipment alone, before dry ice handling, training, maintenance, and an operator's labor. Most buyers should not own the equipment unless they're doing more than ~150 blasting hours per year, have someone whose job already includes operating compressors, and can store and consume dry ice fast enough to avoid sublimation losses. How to read an apples-to-apples quote
- The hourly rate or project total, with the applicable minimum stated clearly
- Whether dry ice is included or billed separately
- Whether travel and mobilization are itemised for your address, and which service zone it falls in
- Containment, lift, and after-hours premiums called out as separate line items
- Documentation deliverable named (per-asset photo log, Xactimate-ready packet, SSOP-keyed photo log)
- Insurance, MSHA / OSHA, and food-safety credentials referenced where relevant
How to get an accurate quote from us
Photos and a rough scope — surface, buildup, square footage, access, and timing — are enough for a written quote in most cases, usually back to you the same day. For larger jobs, first-time accounts, or anything inside a live food plant or energized electrical room, a 30-minute site walk is free and almost always pays for itself in scope accuracy. We'd rather walk a site for free and bid the right number than under-scope a job and ask for a change order later.
